When addressing stuttering in children and adolescents, my approach is holistic and influenced by the "Educate, Ease, and Empower" framework (Gore & Luckman Margulis, 2022). This method not only addresses the stuttering itself but also the individual’s relationship with their speech and the world around them.
Gore, K., & Luckman Margulis, C. (2022). 3Es: An all-inclusive stuttering therapy tool. Perspectives of the ASHA Special Interest Groups, 7(3), 716-727.
The "Educate" component involves providing information about stuttering, including its nature, causes, and the experiences of those who stutter. This education empowers individuals and families with a deeper understanding of stuttering, helping to dispel myths and reduce stigma associated with the condition.
"Ease" focuses on developing speech fluency and communication skills through practice and technique improvement. This includes strategies for managing stuttering more effectively in daily conversations, enhancing the ease of speaking, and reducing physical tensions or struggles associated with stuttering.
"Empowerment" is about fostering a positive self-image and building confidence in communication abilities, regardless of stuttering. It involves activities that encourage individuals to engage fully in social, educational, and professional opportunities. This includes advocacy, self-disclosure, and actively participating in speaking situations previously avoided.
Individuals can expect to gain a better understanding of their stuttering, learn practical strategies to manage it, and feel more confident in their communication skills. This approach aims for individuals to embrace their unique voice, reduce the impact of stuttering on their lives, and achieve their communication goals.
By focusing on Educate, Ease, and Empower, I aim to provide a well-rounded support system for individuals who stutter and their families, promoting a positive and proactive stance towards stuttering .
