Frequently Asked Questions: Adult Stuttering

Please reach us at hello@brouwertherapy.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Brouwer Therapy's approach, inspired by my conversations with Chris Constantino and others on the podcast, centers around equipping individuals and their families with education, ease, and empowerment regarding stuttering. We aim to foster a positive stuttering identity, encouraging individuals to become less "stutter-phobic" and more accepting and open about their stuttering as an integral part of their identity.

Previous therapy experiences, while valuable, may have focused extensively on achieving fluency. Our practice acknowledges the complexity of stuttering and offers a different perspective. By emphasizing stutter-affirming therapy, we help individuals find value in their stuttering, viewing it as a source of strength and character rather than solely as a challenge to be overcome.

It's understandable to have concerns about shifting focus from fluency. Our approach is based on the belief that by embracing and valuing stuttering, individuals can experience a more authentic and less burdensome way of communicating. This doesn't dismiss the desire for fluency but promotes a balanced and accepting view of stuttering that can lead to more confident and spontaneous speech.

Embracing stuttering is a personal and often challenging journey. Our practice supports individuals at their own pace, offering strategies and insights to gradually build a positive stuttering identity. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, we aim to transform stuttering into an aspect of life that individuals can approach with confidence.
